<p><em>Unlike legitimate professional therapy conversion therapy is not evidence-based and most formal conversion therapy programs in the U.S. have shut down in recent years. Scientific evidence has found conversion therapy to be both ineffective and psychologically harmful. Conversion therapy inhibits coping social support and identity exploration encourages isolation and distrust of family and friends and can lead to shame and reduced self-esteem. DignityUSA has produced a booklet to support a truly Catholic approach to LGBTQ+ flourishing and to warn people of the dangers of pseudoscientific methods which purport to change attraction patterns.
