WASHINGTON, D. C., December 21--Pope Benedict XVI and the Vatican bureaucracy have released a number of troubling statements in recent days disparaging lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and speaking against their right to be treated fairly in civil society.

We are saddened, but not surprised that the Roman Catholic hierarchy has found fault with the valuable work of yet another female theologian.

 Dear Delegate,

As Catholics, we value our faith tradition that calls us to speak on behalf of the marginalized and create a church and a society in which all God’s children are welcomed. We are called to live together, ever keeping before us the charge to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God, as called for in Micah 6:8.

C., November 8, 2011--The majority of American Catholics disagree with the teachings of their bishops on sexual issues so often that it is a wonder that the news media continues to speak of the Catholic Church’s position on a given issue when what they really mean is the position of the Catholic hierarchy.
