Gay Catholic Group Celebrates 40 Years in Washington, DC

All the mainline Christian denominations by now have gay subgroups that have formed and many in the U.S. — Episcopalians, United Methodists and others — can point to huge strides they’ve made over the last several decades in persuading their hierarchies to acknowledge their presence.

Washington, DC— In an historic convening on Capitol Hill today, prominent Catholics and a leading researcher discussed the strong support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals among Catholic laity. The event was organized to raise awareness among policymakers as they consider legislation that impacts the LGBT community by Equally Blessed, a coalition of Roman Catholic organizations that supports LGBT equality, and supported by the Arcus Foundation.

October 6, 2010--Equally Blessed stands with Minnesota Catholics who are taking their support for equality into Mass by wearing a rainbow ribbon or pin. About two dozen people who wore these symbols to a Mass recently celebrated by Archbishop John C. Nienstedt were denied Communion by the Archbishop.
